Great experience at TDF and Giro

I took a tour and rode the final two weeks of the Tour de France with STI. They were such a great time I decided to ride the Giro de Italia with them in 2006. Top hotels, nice buses, and you get to ride with a veteran pro who has ridden that specific race in the near past. Awesome time!

Reasonable cost for the self sufficient rider

A friend and I booked a 10 day tour that included the Tour of Flanders Sportive and race, the Scheldeprix, the Roubaix challenge and Paris Roubaix race. On off days we were either riding our bikes or visiting the Tour of Flanders museum and the Merckx factory. Booking the tour was odd, to say the least. The sales staff didn't seem well briefed. For instance, I wanted to rent bikes from STI, but the cost, the bike brands and the number of days we would be renting for seemed to be a moving target. I eventually rented elsewhere. As we were flying direct from the US we elected not to take the coach from the UK. We arrived early in Ghent and our rooms were all ready for us at the Novotel Centrum (nice accommodations). We met one of our guides in the afternoon and he told us what time to meet for the Tour of Flanders Sportive in the morning. We met at the appointed time and walked over to the hotel that the coach was leaving from, only to find that the coach left without us AND the guide. After some scrambling a van west sent back from the start to pick us up and we barely made it to the start before the noon cutoff. Or so we thought we were at the start...as a chip timed event neither us nor the guide ever crossed the timing pad. This was as much the organizers fault as the guides, and honestly we weren't interested in our time. However, I know many people who would become unglued by this. Our biggest complaint about STI was the lack of effective communications. For instance, we were to meet the guide at the finish of the event. Where? There was over 16,000 people riding this, and our van was parked a few km from the finish. We finally found our way to the van where the guide was. I could give lots of examples of places that STI could have easily enhanced our experience at no cost to them, but suffice it to say that customer service excellence trickles down from the top...as does negligence. Our hotel experience in Valenciennes FR for the final four days was not as positive in Ghent. The room was okay and the meals provided there. The meals were pretty darn bad. I would have preferred fending for myself but no restaurants were located nearby. The guides took us out on rides...great places to go. But should you not be able to keep up, bring a good map of the area to find our way back to the hotel. With STI you NEED to be somewhat self sufficient. The guides were very good about making sure everyone got to where they needed to be at the end of the trip. They were very flexible about view points of the race and took us to preview some difficult cobble sections. I may sound negative about STI but i believe they provided good value. Other tour operates would charge 3x as much as STI to kiss your butt. I feel as though I am a self sufficient traveler who just needs to be pointed in the right direction. If you use STI you should think the same way. Would I use them again? Sure, for a bike trip like this. Would they be my choice if I was climbing Everest or rafting class 4 rapids? Hell no! The price is right, the service isn't. Do your own homework and STI can be a very good value.

Tour de France with STI

I went to the Tour de France with them. The trip was great overall but STI did not have much to do with that. They were disorganized and going with them didn't really make the trip easier or more fun than if I'd planned it myself. The price seems right, but they just don't care that much about you as a customer. The only real qualifier I can offer is that almost everyone I know who has gone to the TDF has had a similar experience regardless of the vendor they have used, including some of the higher end one.

Yorkshire Grand Depart (TDF 2014)

We planned a 3 week trip to England to include the Yorkshire Grand Depart; STI was the only company that we found that included this as a stand alone option. I planned to ride along the first two stages of the tour on a bike rented from STI. Stage 1 was great, and the guide was acceptable; however, I learned at the end of that day that I needed to have the bike back to STI by 9:00 a.m. on the second day. I paid a lot of money to rent the bike for one day. That was probably the most significant disappointment. Here are other issues we had with STI: We did not receive an itinerary before leaving for England and for some reason we could not receive e-mails; but then on site at the hotel no one had a hard copy itinerary. The "representative in the hotel lobby" only had names of those who paid to sit in the grandstands (apparently), but not those of us on the cheaper "tour." I had to pester (hound, get in their face) one or two folks to find out about my rental bike, where and when to meet for our ride on Stage 1, receive the promised jersey etc. The info presented when we paid our deposit was not what was eventually offered; i.e. STI did NOT take non-riders to the start of the tour in Leeds etc. Fortunately my wife is fine on her own because there was no one to assist or offer suggestions of how to "experience" the tour. We are fairly self-sufficient, and STI did get us what we needed -- a hotel in Harrogate, a bike to ride on the tour course -- but we will NEVER go on a tour with them again. The customer service was non-existent as far as we were concerned.
